The Structural Biology Laboratory at the Victor Chang Cardiac Reseach Institute uses X-ray crystallography to determine the structure of proteins to near atomic resolution. The visualisation of proteins on computer screens is essential to understand the function of individual proteins in health and disease and how they interact with each other in their cellular environment and with drugs.

The Laboratory was set up in October 2006 and has new and state-of-the-art equipment for bacterial and yeast cell culture, for protein purification and an in house X-ray facility with high-throughput crystallisation robot (TTP Labtech Mosquito), light microscopes, a high brilliance X-ray source (Rigaku Micromax 007HF) and an X-ray detector (Mar345 image plate). The facility supports structural investigations within the institute and at St Vincent’s site and has a strong Research program centered around the structure of membrane proteins and molecular machines.
